… not sure how or where to begin learning more. Here’s some practical
ideas that may get help get you started on this amazing trip into the world of
healing energy. First, be open to the possibility of rapidly change. I got
interested in Energy Psychology through the use of Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a powerful therapeutic technique which involves
the client tuning into a trauma and rapidly moving their eyes bilaterally. I
watched the power of EMDR to transform a client quickly from a place of pain and
suffering to relief, insight and hope for the future. It was witnessing this
amazing ability to see change happen in an instant that lead me to be open to
the idea that acupressure tapping or other energy work could also lead to rapid
healing.
I have taken over 500 hours of training in Energy Psychology and Energy
Medicine. I would suggest taking an introductory course in Energy Psychology. I
offer a two-day course that is chalk full of information on how to do EFT, TFT
and energy testing. If it is not possible to attend a course, you can learn a
lot through home study. I would recommend looking at Gary Craig’s website
www.emofree.com. Gary Craig developed Emotional Freedom Techniques and has made
his manual available off the internet. You can download his manual for free. He
also offers a great home study course that includes lots of videos. I would also
recommend reading Fred Gallo’s excellent book, Energy Psychology(ISBN:
1-57444-184-1). This book covers the history of the use of energy in healing and
gives information on how to do Thought Field Therapy as well as a number of
other energy psychology techniques. For more advanced study, I would also
recommend Fred Gallo’s EDxTM Certification course. It’s a 48-hour program to
teach energy diagnosis and it will give you insights on treatment for difficult
issues. Training in chakra work would also provide another modality with which
to effect a change in the body’s energy system.
What is also important in learning energy work is staying open to your own
fears and blocks to doing this type of work. For those who have been trained in
traditional psychotherapy, moving into the use of acupressure tapping techniques
or chakra work in your practice can feel scary: "What will my clients/my
colleagues think of me?" or "I feel as if am just learning this. How
can I use it responsibly with my clients." or "Where is the research
to support its validity?" (see www.energypsych.org)
What I would suggest is using the techniques you are learning to clear up the
fears, worries and concerns that may hold you back from using these tools. By
using these tools to help clear up your own issues, you can then go to the
client with the perspective of someone who has benefited from the technique. I
would also suggest trying the energy techniques first with the clients who know
you well. I have some longer term clients who are open to trying the latest
techniques that I have learned. I work with these clients first to get more
confidence to expand the techniques to other clients. I always offer the energy
work as an option, as a gift to my clients. I have come to accept that there
will be some clients who may not yet be ready to accept the gift I am offering.
I am respectful of their choice.
Another way to help build confidence in the practice of energy work is to
connect with others who share this interest. After returning from my energy
training, I would meet with other therapists and colleagues who were interested
but not yet sure about this "strange work". I would show them the
tools, and offer to do some work with them. Most of these colleagues have gone
on to take formal training in energy psychology. Out of this sharing, I was able
to foster the creation of a Energy Psychology Interest group. This group meets
monthly to share information on workshops we have attended, books we have read
and consult with each other on practice issues. Having a support group has been
instrumental in all of us feeling confident in moving ahead in practice of
energy psychology.
